People remember:
- 10% of what they READ
- 20% of what they HEAR
- 30% of what they SEE
- 50% of what they HEAR and SEE
- 90% of what they DO
With that in mind, a good guideline for the distribution of
time in presenting a manual skills lesson would be:
- 20% Explanation - getting attention, introduction and learning objectives
- 20% Demonstration – actual demonstration of the skill
- 20% Guide – assist learner in doing the skill
- 40 % Enable – learners apply skill on their own
Observations of instructors in the past have revealed that
most of them have apportioned their time this way:
- 60 % Explanation
- 25% Demonstration
- 15% Guide
- 10 % Enable
More DO and less TALK is likely to produce greater
competence in the participant. Make demonstrations as dramatic as possible to
sustain participant interest. Put as much showmanship in your demonstration as possible
without departing from the principle to be taught.
