Job Description:
Those with higher ranking in the merit list generally opt of IAS, IPS and IFS. The remaining candidates who are selected get into various other central services on the basis of their ranking and option. These officers unlike IAS and IPS officers serve only the central government. The area of work depends on the service that they enter.  Functional areas of some of these Group ‘A’ services are as below:
Ø Indian Railway Traffic Services (IRTS) looks after the transportation and commercial matters of the railways. It comprises of the Operations Division and the Commercial Division. Operations Division controls the movement of trains and the Commercial Division is responsible for all the freight and passengers carried by trains. Activities of the Commercial Division include ticket checking, catering, and advertising and general railway administration.
Ø Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS) handles the accounting and finance section of the railways, which includes monitoring of purchase of equipments by Railways, calculation of bonus for the employees every year and managing the income and expenditure of Railways.
Ø Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) handles recruitment of all railway staff. Planning of such recruitment, deciding on promotions, postings, training, welfare activities issuing orders for transfers, promotions, disciplinary action, payments to be made in the event of an employees’ death etc all come under the purview of this service.
